Vascular History Taking
Overview
Taking a vascular history tends to mean a focused history looking at arterial symptoms in the context of PVD.
The process should follow the usual history-taking sequence, with particular emphasis as described here.
Presenting Complaint
Most commonly:
- Pain in the calf on walking.
- Pain in the foot at night.
- Noticed a toe has become discoloured.
- Ulceration.
History of Presenting Complaint
SOCRATES history of pain (see Figure 11.1). In claudication, the pain is typically:
- localised to the calf and sometimes the buttock
- aching/cramping/tight
- relieved with rest
- occurring after consistent distance
- relieved after consistent rest time
- inclined to pass without the patient needing to sit down (suggesting a load-bearing problem, e.g. hip pain).
In rest pain, the pain is:
