Each year, the council invites applications for travel grants for the annual ASE Scientific Sessions, and two vascular ultrasound practitioners are chosen to receive travel support. These travel grants are funded by the ASE Foundation Annual Appeal. For the 2013 Scientific Sessions in Minneapolis, two sonographers, Katerina Exis and Anyi Liu received Vascular Council travel grants. Their impressions from the meeting follow.
Katerina: Without financial support, I would not have been able to attend this annual conference which allowed me to stay up-to-date on current advances and future research directions. I met a wonderful cardiologist from India who spoke on research studies. One of the most interesting was “Endothelium-Dependent Brachial Artery Flow Mediated Vasodilatation in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus with and without Coronary Artery Disease.” It was fascinating, and I asked him to send me more information on it.
I learned new information on many things like left atrial volume, strain imaging, and right ventricle assessment; “whens and how-tos” that I can apply in my daily work. I have shared information from all the presentations I attended with my co-workers. I also got the chance to meet sonographers, doctors, fellows, and students from all over the world. The member reception at the park was a great opportunity to share ideas, techniques, and other work experiences. The exhibits were also great; I had a chance to experience strain imaging, 3D and 4D with GE representatives.
The opportunity for hands-on practice with experts was invaluable. I learned so much from this conference, and would highly recommend attendance by all in this field. Not only does it allow one stay up-to-date with current advances, but one can also earn CMEs to maintain credentials. I will personally try to attend these annual conferences in the future, as they are the key to knowledge and information about advances both now and in the future.
At my institution, the Walter Reed National Military Center, I have the opportunity to share the information I learn, not only with my coworkers but also with the fellows in training. I have no doubt that our patients have already benefitted from the knowledge I gained. My experience at the 2013 Annual Scientific Sessions has enabled me to provide world-class care to our nation’s soldiers and their families.
