Transapical aortic valve implantation: first 325 patients in a single center

Background

Transapical aortic valve implantation is a novel therapeutic approach in high-risk patients with severe aortic stenosis. We report a single-center experience during and after the learning curve for establishing this new method.

Methods

Between April 2008 and December 2010, 325 patients [mean age, 79±9 years (range, 28–99 years)] were treated by transapical aortic valve implantation. The mean logistic euroSCORE for the whole group was 38±19% (range, 5%–97%). No patient was refused regardless of comorbidities. Nineteen patients were in cardiogenic shock. Planned additional procedures during valve implantation were performed in 45 patients (elective coronary stents in 33 patients, tricuspid valve repair in 2, ASD II closure in 1, miscellaneous in 9). Cardiopulmonary bypass was used in 18 patients (13 elective, 5 emergency).
