Prevalence of depression in cardiac catheterization laboratory in Veteran Administration system

Background

Coronary artery disease (CAD) and depression are both highly prevalent diseases. However, little is known about the effect of depression on patients in the Veterans Administration (VA) system. Our objective was to analyze the prevalence of depression in cardiovascular patients who entered the cardiac catheterization laboratory and the effectiveness of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) in the VA population.

Methods

A total of 563 unique patients from June 1, 2009, to June 1, 2010, in the cardiac catheterization laboratory at the Jesse Brown VA in Chicago, IL, were studied. All consecutive patients’ medical records were examined retrospectively for cardiac history, CAD and PHQ-9 screening totals. Results of PHQ-9 screening were tabulated, and differences between depressed and nondepressed patients were analyzed by χ 2 and independent-samples t tests.
