Introduction
The epidemics of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and atrial fibrillation are growing as the demographic profile in the United States is leaning towards elderly population. However, the relationship between OSA and the pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation (afib) is not well elucidated. Recent data have suggested that OSA is associated with increased oxidative stress through expression of NADPH (NOX) oxidase. Previously, we documented the association between oxidative stress and afib.
Hypothesis
Patients with OSA and afib will have a worsened oxidative stress profile compared to patients with afib and no OSA and hence can have more recurrences of AF.
