Clinical outcomes and quality of life assessment of patients with diabetes mellitus undergoing surgical ablation of atrial fibrillation

Introduction

The Framingham Heart Study showed that patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) were 1.4ā€“1.6 times more likely to develop atrial fibrillation (AF) and were at a twofold risk of having an embolic stroke. As options for treating AF increase, it is important to understand the clinical outcomes of patients undergoing surgical ablation procedures. This study aims to look at the clinical outcomes of patients with DM following surgical ablation of AF.

Methods

From January 2005 to October 2010, 507 patients have undergone surgical ablation at our institute, of which 86 patients were found to have DM. Demographic and outcome data to include rhythm status verified by EKG/24-h Holter were obtained through our surgical ablation registry and our local Society of Thoracic Surgeon’s database. Health Related Quality of Life (HRQL) (SF-12) was obtained preoperatively and at 3, 6, 12 and 24 months and then yearly postsurgery. HRQL (SF-12) from baseline and at 6 months was compared for % change.
