Presentation
A 51-year-old woman is referred to a thoracic surgeon because of an abnormal finding on chest x-rays that were obtained as part of a preoperative evaluation for an elective cholecystectomy.
▪ Chest X-rays
Chest X-ray Report
The chest x-rays demonstrate a mass in the right superior mediastinum. The heart is of normal size, and there are no lung masses or pleural effusions.
Discussion
The patient reports a 30-pack-per-year smoking history and coughing episodes almost every morning. She has no history of hemoptysis, fevers, night sweats, chills, pleuritic pain, or complaints suggesting heart disease. Physical examination shows no palpable masses in the neck or supraclavicular area.
Recommendation
Computed tomography (CT) scans.
