What Does the Restructure of the American Society of Echocardiography Board Mean for Sonographers?

An organization’s board of directors is responsible for supporting and developing a strategic plan to complete the organization’s mission and goals. Once the plan is developed, the work is often carried out through committees. The board size is often established to be large enough to get the work done, but small enough to keep all directors engaged and to allow for efficient decision making. As organizations grow or expand their mission, goals, and/or membership, the composition of the board may need to change. This change in composition is needed to keep the organization healthy and poised for future growth.

In June 2016, the American Society of Echocardiography proposed and approved a Board of Directors restructure to start June 2017. Under this new proposal, eight elected directors and two past president positions will phase out between 2017 and 2020. By the year 2021, the Board will be composed of seven Executive Committee Members and 13 other members (see Table 1 ).
