PP-042 The Relationship of Hyperhomocysteinemia with Hypertension

Aim

Hyperhomocysteinemia has been associated with a wide spectrum of disorders including cardiovascular diseases, stroke, venous thromboembolism and hypertension. Elevated homocysteinemia concentrations have been reported in hypertensive patients of different age and ethnicity. Hyperhomocysteinemia may elevate blood pressure by damaging endothelial integrity, increasing vascular stiffness, and reducing vasodilatory capacity. However, conflicting results have been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of the hyperhomocysteinemia with hypertension.

Methods

We investigated arterial blood pressure and biochemical parameters in 25 subjects (15 males and 10 females) with hyperhomocysteinemia. Serum levels of folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6 were measured. Also methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T and MTHFR 1298 polymorphisms were investigated. The serum homocysteine concentration values greater than 15 μmol/L are accepted as hyperhomocysteinemia.
