Objective
Oxidative stress is associated with cardiovascular diseases and pentraxin 3 (PTX3) is independently associated with the risk of developing vascular events. PTX3 deficiency is associated with increased inflammation, cardiac damage, and atherosclerosis. The present trial was designed to investigate the effects of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) on plasma oxidant/antioxidant balance and to determine the relation between the PTX3 levels and the oxidative stress parameters in patients with IDA.
Methods
A total of 72 individuals, including 37 patients with IDA and 35 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Oxidative and anti-oxidative status was evaluated by measuring the total oxidative stress (TOS), the oxidative stress index (OSI) and total anti-oxidant status (TAS). Serum PTX3 level was measured by enzyme immunoassay using a quantitative kit.
