OP-118 Comparing Four Patient Preparation Methods for Transesophageal Echocardiography

Background

Introducing transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) has provided a new window to the heart. With this technique high-quality images of certain cardiovascular structures may be obtained readily. Although safe when properly conducted, insertion and movement of the TEE probe may cause hypopharyngeal, esophageal, or gastric trauma. Moreover sedating the patients for the procedure may cause sleepiness and gate imbalance after TEE.

Methods

We have reported all the patients undergoing TEE at a university hospital in Tehran, Iran from 23 of September 2013 to the 20 of March 2014(the second 6 months of the Persian calendar). The patients were assigned to four preparation groups for TEE. The first group received ‘Midazolam’, the second group received ‘Hydrocortisone’, the third group received both ‘Midazolam and Hydrocortisone’ and the forth group received ‘no preparation regimen’ before TEE. For all the patients Lidocaine gel and spray were administered before the procedure. The major complications after TEE were recorded and compared in these four groups.
