Objective
In prediabetic individuals, the risk of cardiovascular disease is higher than the individuals with normoglycemia. Three dimensional echocardiography (3D ECHO) has its greatest advantage in volumetric imaging and evaluating of LA functions. Aims of this study are (i) to evaluate LA volume and the mechanical functions in prediabetic individuals by using 3D ECHO (ii) to investigate the relationship between N-terminal pro-atrial natriuretic peptide (NT-proANP) and these parameters.
Methods
A total of 84 patients; 41 patients (17 female) who admitted endocrinology clinic underwent oral glucose tolerance test and diagnosed as prediabetes and 43 healthy controls (16 female) were enrolled. All individuals participating in the study were underwent clinical and echocardiographic evaluation. EF, LA diameter, E, A, E/A ratio, DT, Em, Am, E/Em ratio, Em/Am ratio, IVRT, IVCT, S and ET values were measured by using 2D ECHO. The parameters assessing 3D echocardiographic volumes and mechanical functions; LA maximum volume (Vmax), LA minimum volume (Vmin), before atrial contraction volume (VpreA), LA active stroke volume (ASV), LA total stroke volume (SV), LA active emptying fraction (AEF), LA total emptying fraction (TEF), LA passive emptying fraction (PEF), LA expansion index (EI), and LA volume index (SAVI) were calculated. In addition, plasma NT-proANP levels were measured in both groups. The relationship between NT-proANP levels and LA volumes and mechanical functions were investigated.
