Background
Hypertensives in whom the 24-h blood pressure variability (BPV) is low have a lower prevalence and severity of target-organ damage than those in whom BPV is high. The association between BPV and inflammation has been reported previously. Also, red cell distribution width (RDW) which reflects ongoing vascular inflammation, is elevated in hypertensive patients compared with normotensives. We aimed to investigate correlation between diurnal BPV with RDW levels in newly diagnosed hypertensive patients.
Methods
A total of 210 subjects with newly diagnosed and untreated essential hypertension were enrolled. 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) was performed for each patient. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) was assessed using the latex-enhanced immunoturbidimetric method.
