Good Books in Cardiovascular Disease Received in 2014 and in Early 2015

Major Textbooks

  • 1.

Mann DL, Zipes DP, Libby P, Bonow RO, editors. Braunwald’s HEART DISEASE: A Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine , Volumes 1 and 2, 10th edition. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Elsevier Saunders 2015:1943, $211.91.

This book of about 2,000 pages probably contains more information than any cardiovascular book ever published! Each page is fully packed, the illustrations are superb, the references are numerous but of small font such that they do not occupy a great deal of space. The 139 contributors of the 71 chapters are representative of the best of the cardiologic profession. It also includes a disclosure index and 54 pages for chapter listings. If there is one book to purchase in cardiology, this is the one. And it is kept up to date online by Eugene Braunwald himself. It may be more worthwhile each month to read this book than all the cardiologic journals put together. And the most recent guidelines follow each appropriate chapter.

Lipids

  • 2.

Ballantyne CM, editor. Clinical Lipidology: A Companion to Braunwald’s HEART DISEASE , 2nd edition. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Elsevier Saunders 2015:550, $143.07.

This 550-page book with 99 contributors is an offshoot of Braunwald’s Heart Disease. It too is packed full as is Braunwald’s HEART DISEASE. Lipid therapy (statins, ezetimibe, etc.) is changing the face of atherosclerosis. Coronary events are decreasing and cardiac mortality is decreasing despite waist circumferences’ increasing. Highly recommended.

Diabetes Mellitus

  • 3.

McGuire DK, Marx N, editors. Diabetes in CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE: A Companion to Braunwald’s HEART DISEASE. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Elsevier Saunders 2015:398, $179.55.

These editors have put together another of the Braunwald textbook offshoots with an up-to-date by 65 contributors. With caloric intake increasing and physical activity decreasing around the world, obesity has reached pandemic proportions and diabetes mellitus is one of the major consequences. These editors gather the best to produce 31 chapters connecting diabetes mellitus to cardiovascular disease.

Arrhythmias and Conduction Disturbances

  • 4.

    Printed on acid-free paper.

Asirvatham SJ, editor in chief; Cha Y-M, Friedman PA, associate editors. Mayo Clinic Electrophysiology Manual. New York, New York: Oxford University Press 2014:711, $175.28.

  • 5.

Huang SKS, Miller JM, editors. Catheter Ablation of Cardiac Arrhythmias , 3rd edition. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Elsevier Saunders 2015:775, $353.63.

The Huang-Miller book has the format of one of the Braunwald offshoot books but is not part of that series. The book is a third edition, the first one appearing in 2006. I suspect that this book represents the best in this arena and it is provided by 95 contributors. The Asirvatham book is of similar size but is not as eloquently prepared.
