Two-D echocardiography has improved the sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of cardiac myxomas. TTE and transesophageal echocardiography can identify the size, shape, location, point of attachment, and motion characteristics of cardiac myxomas. Doppler assessment of the flow patterns provides further information regarding the hemodynamic consequences of myxomas. Atrial myxomas are characteristically rounded or ovoid echogenic masses that are mobile and have cystic changes in some cases.
Three-dimensional echocardiography can show a three dimensional image of the tumor.
The different sizes, locations of myxomas are shown (Figures 60.2 and 60.3, Videoclips 60.1 and 60.2).
