Hospital Course
This defect was oversewn with a pericardial patch during cardiopulmonary bypass. The patient was discharged in stable condition 9 days after operation.
Discussion
Even after penetrating cardiac injury a shunt is not always immediately created. A fistula may be created or enlarged over time in an area of weakness. As in our case, discovery of a defect can be delayed days after the initial insult. A murmur is usually appreciated, however.
